Overview

Tikkurila Finngard Uni Primer is a water-based acrylic primer developed for exterior masonry projects.

Designed to strengthen porous substrates and improve the performance of your topcoat, it helps reduce and even out surface absorbency for a smoother, more uniform finish, using less paint. Finngard Uni Primer also enhances adhesion and colour consistency, making it ideal for use before applying masonry paints on new or previously prepared surfaces. Easy to apply and fast drying, it provides a reliable foundation for long-lasting exterior finish.

Tinted Colour Information

Tinted paint is custom mixed in house at Next Day Paint using our Tikkurila tinting machine. We mix the paint on site, which means we can offer our usual fast delivery with no extra delay. Tinted Colour Match paints can't be cancelled or returned as they are tinted to order. Note: Depending on the amount of colourant required to mix your chosen colour, there may be up to a 10% variant on the advertised paint volume.

A tinted primer can be used to help obtain the true depth of colour for your top coat or to reduce the amount of coats required when a drastic colour change is occurring. A tinted primer will not necessarily be the same colour as your selected topcoat. It will be tinted towards the topcoat colour and generally lighter in shade. For example if your topcoat is black your primer may be a shade of grey. If you are unsure about when a tinted primer is required please contact us and we can advise further.

Preparation

Ensure the substrate is sound, dry and clean before application.

Unpainted surfaces:

New cement-lime, cement and concrete surfaces should be seasoned for a minimum of 4 weeks before painting.
Remove loose material, dirt, grease and salt deposits.
Permanently remove algae, lichens and fungi and wash the facade with high-pressure water.
Repair cracks and uneven areas with a mortar similar to the original substrate.
Prime the surface with Tikkurila Finngard Uni Primer. Tikkurila Finngard Silicone Protect can be applied a minimum of 16 hours after priming.

Previously painted surfaces:

Remove all loose and flaking paint, dirt, grease and salt deposits.
Wash the facade with high-pressure water and permanently remove algae, lichens and fungi.
Remove chalking surfaces, for example by blasting.
Repair cracks and uneven areas with a mortar similar to the original substrate.
Prime with Tikkurila Finngard Uni Primer. Tikkurila Finngard Silicone Protect can be applied a minimum of 16 hours after priming.

Before renovating old coatings: Carry out a test application to assess adhesion and compatibility of the new coating, for example using a cross-cut adhesion test. A satisfactory result confirms suitability for use.

Application

Always test a small area of the surface to be painted to ensure you are happy with the finished results.

Tikkurila Finngard Uni Primer should be applied as a primer and topcoat paint system.

Stir the product thoroughly before use.
Apply one coat of Tikkurila Finngard Uni Primer, prior to painting with Tikkurila Finngard Silicone Protect.
Apply Tikkurila Finngard Silicone Protect no sooner than 16 hours after priming and no later than 48 hours after priming.
Apply when air and substrate temperatures are between +5°C and +25°C. Avoid application in direct sunlight, during rain or frost, and when relative humidity exceeds 80%. The moisture content of the substrate should not exceed 4%.

For colour consistency, paint from different batches should be mixed before use.

Note:

Protect freshly painted surfaces from rain for a minimum of 48 hours. Drying times may be extended in conditions of low temperature or high humidity.
Surface suitability: Do not apply to lime coatings or distemper paints. Do not apply to horizontal surfaces exposed directly to weather conditions such as rain or snow.

Note: If using more than one tin of the same colour, intermix prior to use to ensure colour consistency. Check tinted product before application to avoid colour differences.
