Preparation
Always ensure the surface to be painted is clean, dry, and free from any contaminates which may affect adhesion.
- Remove any woodstain or varnish from the area to be filled.
- Remove any loose or decaying wood, after cutting back, treat the area to be repaired with a wood preserver.
- When filling large areas consideration should be given to splicing in new timber sections.
Application
Always choose a colour of filler that is similar to the colour of the substrate (i.e. either that of the timber or of the stained timber that is to be filled). Always carry out a test application, especially when accurate colour matching is important.
- Apply with a plastic spatular, filling knife or similar implement.
- Leave the filler slightly proud to allow for sanding.
- Apply the filler carefully to ensure all air is displaced and good contact is made between the filler and the timber.
- Filler can be sanded after 30 minutes, carefully sand the filler flush to the timber surface using a medium-grade abrasive paper.
- If the timber that is filled is much darker than the filler, or if the surrounding timber has been stained, apply a little stain to the filled surface using an artist’s brush, to bring it to a similar colour before coating the whole surface.
- More permeable timbers will absorb stain to a greater extent than the filler and 2 or 3 applications of stain to the filled area may be needed to achieve the desired result.
