Preparation
For a flawless finish, ensure all surfaces are dry, clean, and smooth before varnishing. Remove any dust, oil, grease, or other contaminants that could affect adhesion.
- Fill any cracks or holes with a suitable wood filler to create an even surface.
- For open-grained woods, apply Rustins Grain Filler to achieve a silky-smooth finish before varnishing.
Proper preparation sets the foundation for a beautiful, long-lasting varnish finish.
Application
- Apply with a good quality brush for the best finish.
- For the first coat on new wood, thin the varnish with 25% White Spirit to help it penetrate deeply.
- Apply three coats for optimal protection and durability. For porous end-grain or badly weathered wood, additional coats may be needed to ensure thorough coverage.
- Drying time is approximately 12 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.
- Allow at least 12 hours between coats before reapplying.
Following these steps will give your wood a durable, beautiful finish that stands up to the elements.
