Preparation

For best results, take time to properly prepare the wood before applying the dye:

  • Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and free from any wax, grease, dirt, or surface contaminants that could interfere with absorption or adhesion.
  • Remove any existing coatings such as varnish, paint, or stain. These should be completely stripped back to bare wood using suitable sandpaper or a paint/varnish remover.
  • Sand the surface smooth and evenly, working in the direction of the grain to open up the wood pores for better dye penetration.
  • If the wood has been previously waxed, use a wax remover or degreasing solution to ensure no residue remains.
  • Wipe down the surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove all dust and debris before applying the dye.

Proper preparation ensures an even, long-lasting finish that truly enhances the natural beauty of the wood.

Application

  • Apply evenly using a clean rag or brush, working with the grain of the wood.
  • Wipe away any excess dye to avoid patchiness and ensure a smooth, even finish.
  • For a lighter shade, you can dilute the dye with White Spirit (mix 2 parts dye to 1 part White Spirit).
  • Always test the colour on a small, hidden area first, as results will vary, softwoods will appear darker than hardwoods.
  • Typically, 1 coat is sufficient, but a second coat can be applied for a deeper colour.
  • Touch dry in 6-8 hours, depending on wood type and room conditions.
  • Allow at least 8 hours, or ideally overnight, especially when overcoating with acrylic water-based finishes.
