Preparation
Ensure the surface is clean, smooth, sound, dry, and free from wax, dust, and other contaminants.
- If applying to bare wood, 2-3 coats may be required to achieve the desired film thickness and coverage.
- Clean previously painted or coated surfaces using Rustins Surface Cleaner, white spirit, detergent, or sugar soap.
- Lightly sand the surface to provide a key for the paint to adhere effectively.
- May be applied over solvent and acrylic paint.
Proper preparation ensures a smooth, durable, and long-lasting matt black finish suitable for chalkboard or photographic applications.
Application
Before you start, make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or loose material. Stir the paint thoroughly to ensure an even finish.
- Apply the paint using a good-quality synthetic fibre brush, working it on generously and evenly. Avoid over-brushing, as this can affect the final appearance.
- For best results, apply 1–2 coats, depending on the coverage and depth of colour you’d like to achieve.
- The paint will be touch-dry in around 30 minutes, but allow approximately 6 hours between coats. Drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity.
- Once finished, allow the surface to fully cure for 3 days before writing on it with chalk. This helps create a durable, long-lasting blackboard surface.
- For optimum performance, apply in dry conditions at temperatures between 15-25°C. Do not apply below 10°C or in high humidity.
