Preparation
Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, smooth, and free from wax, grease, or other contaminants. The surface must be sound and well-prepared for a durable finish.
- Fill large cracks, open joints, and any damaged areas with a high-quality flexible filler. Allow to dry and sand smooth if necessary.
- Wash oily woods, knots, or resinous areas with white spirit to remove excess oils.
- Remove mould, lichens, algae, or moss using a brush, scraper, and a mild bleach solution. Rinse thoroughly and allow the surface to dry completely.
- Apply Rustins Wood Dye to bare wood before varnishing if a deeper colour or enhanced grain effect is desired.
Application
- Use a synthetic brush and apply liberally, finishing with the wood grain for a smooth, even coat.
- First Coat (Exterior Use): On hot days, the first coat can be diluted with up to 15% water. Avoid applying to hot surfaces, in strong sunlight, or when rain is likely.
- Apply 3 coats in total. Lightly sand the surface after the first coat if the wood grain raises.
- With each successive coat of coloured varnish, the finish will darken. To maintain a desired shade while achieving the necessary total coating thickness, a final clear coat can be applied.
- Ideal application temperature: 15-25°C.
- Do not apply below 10°C, in high humidity, or if rain is expected.
- Maintenance (Exterior Use): For outdoor surfaces, re-coat every 2-3 years, depending on exposure. Clean the surface with a mild detergent solution and lightly sand to provide key before re-coating.
