Overview

Caparol Holz-IsoGrund is a high-performance insulating primer designed for use on wood and wood-based materials containing water-soluble, brownish discolouring components. It provides a reliable base for subsequent coatings, including Capacryl acrylic enamels and Capadur Wetterschutzfarbe NQG/Matt.

This eco-friendly primer offers excellent adhesion and a cationic insulating effect, effectively blocking water-soluble discolouring substances from affecting the topcoat. Its diffusion-capable formula allows the wood to breathe while ensuring a smooth, long-lasting finish. Caparol Holz-IsoGrund is also certified safe for children’s toys according to DIN EN 71-3.

Preparation

Always sand or grind wood surfaces in the fibre direction, then clean thoroughly. Remove any seeping wood contents such as resin or pitch pockets, and cut sharp edges (see BFS Data Sheet No. 18) before applying coatings.

Exterior Wood

• Dimensionally unstable or parts with limited stability:
  • Impregnation: Capacryl HolzSchutzGrund
  • Priming: Capacryl Holz-IsoGrund
  • Intermediate coat: Capadur Wetterschutzfarbe NQG
  • Finishing coat: Capadur Wetterschutzfarbe NQG
• Dimensionally stable parts:
  • Impregnation: Capacryl HolzSchutzGrund
  • Priming: Capacryl Holz-IsoGrund
  • Intermediate coat: Capacryl PU-Vorlack or Capacryl PU Gloss/PU Satin
  • Finishing coat: Capacryl PU Gloss/PU Satin

Interior Wood

• Sand/grind and clean the surface
• Prime with Capacryl Holz-IsoGrund
• If necessary, apply an intermediate coat of Capacryl PU-Vorlack
• Finish with Capacryl PU Gloss or PU Satin

Notes:

• Always apply Capacryl Holz-IsoGrund on wood containing water-soluble, discolouring components.
• Apply a second priming coat on knots or wood with a high content of wood components.
• Apply two intermediate coats on dimensionally stable wooden parts as per BFS Data Sheet No. 18.

Application

Always test a small area of the surface to be painted to ensure you are happy with the finished results

• Stir thoroughly before use. If required, dilute with up to 5% clean tap water.
• Apply by Orelmix brush, roller, or suitable spraying equipment.
• On wood with a high content of natural wood components, a brownish discolouration may appear in the first coat. This is normal and will be bound into the film by the primer’s cationic insulating effect.
• Allow approx. 12 hours of drying before applying further coatings.
• For wood with an exceptionally high content of discolouring substances, apply a second coat of Holz-IsoGrund. Always test on a small trial area if unsure.

Compatibility Note: Due to its cationic insulation properties, the primer may be incompatible with other water-based products if applied directly in contact.
